Agency( Bengaluru): On Sunday, the Cubbon Park Walker’s Association organized its fourth demonstration in two months, opposing the plan to erect a 10-story high court annex within the park, a cherished green space in Bengaluru. This latest protest underscores the community’s ongoing resistance to the proposed development, which they fear will encroach upon the park’s natural beauty and heritage.
Despite the association’s efforts, the government has yet to issue a formal decree halting the construction project, originally slated to replace the old Election Commission building, a site of historical significance. Since the enactment of the Karnataka Government Park (Preservation) Act in 1975, Cubbon Park has been shielded from such development activities, emphasizing its value as a protected urban oasis.
A previous demonstration on February 24 was disbanded after the association’s president, Umesh K, was detained by authorities. This incident was followed by a peaceful protest on March 2, during which it was revealed that officials from the Public Works Department are exploring alternative locations for the annexe.
The most recent gathering, conducted near the park’s dog area, saw participation from both human protesters and their canine companions. Umesh K, speaking with DH, expressed the community’s determination to secure a formal announcement from the government about the relocation of the construction project. He highlighted the importance of Cubbon Park as a sanctuary not only for people but also for wildlife and pets, questioning the future of these inhabitants should the development proceed and result in tree removal.
