Agency(New Delhi): Scores of farmers convened at Ramlila Ground in New Delhi for a “Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat,” organized to voice dissent against the Central government’s agricultural policies. Spearheaded by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), a coalition of farmer organizations known for their 2020-21 protest against the agriculture laws (later repealed), the rally aims to bolster their campaign for farmer-friendly policies and the implementation of minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
Participants, including Harman Singh from Punjab’s Patiala and Ravinder Singh from Bathinda, emphasized their demands for the fulfillment of MSP and urged for accountability and justice for the victims of the October 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, where a vehicle ran over protesting farmers. The protesters call for punitive action against the perpetrators, alongside compensation and government employment for the victims’ families.
The mahapanchayat drew farmers from various regions who, despite restrictions on the number of participants and prohibitions against bringing tractor-trolleys into the capital, assembled to assert their rights and grievances. The event has prompted traffic advisories and heightened security measures around central Delhi to manage the influx of demonstrators.
This significant gathering underscores the continuing agitation within the farming community against perceived injustices and the pursuit of policies that safeguard their interests and livelihoods.
