Agency(New Delhi): In a bold declaration, a leading figure from the Congress party, Pawan Khera, has made it clear that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2019 (CAA) will be revoked should the party secure a victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. During a press conference in Guwahati, Khera voiced concerns over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s absence in Manipur, despite ongoing ethnic conflicts since the previous May.
Khera criticized the CAA for altering the crucial cut-off date for Assam from 1971 to 2014, a move he believes undermines the legacy of those who partook in the Assam Agitation. He emphasized the importance of adhering to constitutional norms when formulating refugee laws, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of placing the legislation above these principles.
The CAA, intended to fast-track citizenship for minorities from neighboring countries, has sparked widespread dissent, particularly in the Northeast. Despite this, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the imminent implementation of the act, further stirring controversy.
Furthermore, Khera chided Modi for his planned visit to Assam while neglecting Manipur and humorously suggested that Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, lend his helicopter to facilitate Modi’s travel to the strife-torn state.
Khera also leveled serious allegations of corruption against Sarma and promised justice and redress for the aggrieved should Congress be elected. He expressed confidence in Congress’s performance in Assam, citing internal surveys predicting a significant electoral win.
Addressing the issue of unemployment and inflation, Khera highlighted these as pivotal electoral issues. The ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ led by Rahul Gandhi was touted as a campaign of justice, reminiscing about the UPA government’s achievements and addressing the critical issue of farmer suicides.
The narrative took a political turn with claims of defections from the BJP to Congress and critiques of the ‘Modi Ka Parivar’ slogan. Khera’s discourse concluded with a stern message to Sarma and others who attempt to hinder Congress’s efforts, reaffirming the party’s commitment to constitutional values and justice.
