Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (Agency): The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced the Nand Baba Milk Mission Scheme with a budget of Rs 1000 crore. The scheme aims to boost milk production and ensure fair prices for milk producers in rural areas, according to an official statement released on Sunday. Under the mission, milk cooperative societies will be established in villages to promote precision dairy farming, increase milk productivity per animal, and provide a proper market for rural milk producers.
Commissioner of the Dairy Development Department, Shashi Bhushan Lal Susheel, highlighted that Uttar Pradesh is the leading milk-producing state in the country, with a production of 33 million metric tonnes, out of the total 221 million metric tonnes produced nationwide. However, there is a need to improve the availability of markets for milk producers in rural areas.
Efforts are underway to address these challenges by increasing the number of markets and value-added animal feed/fodder and organizing animal feed manufacturing units. The focus will also be on enhancing per animal per day milk productivity, which is currently lower in Uttar Pradesh compared to other states. The government aims to overcome skill gaps in milk processing and precision dairy farming and increase the availability of processed milk and milk products at reasonable prices.
The mission has been named after Nand Baba, who was known as the world's largest cow breeder, milk collector, butter producer, and the foster father of Lord Shri Krishna. Nand Baba owned 9 lakh cows and donated 2 lakh cows to support people's livelihoods. The mission's objective is to establish a value chain that encompasses production, collection, processing, and consumption, with a focus on increasing milk productivity, expanding collection and processing capacity, capacity development, and value protection.
The launch of the Nand Baba Milk Mission Scheme signifies the government's commitment to bolstering the dairy sector in Uttar Pradesh and ensuring a sustainable livelihood for milk producers. The scheme aims to enhance milk production, improve market access for rural milk producers, and contribute to the overall growth and development of the dairy industry in the state.
