Agency(New Delhi): The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee has issued a formal appeal for action against what it describes as severe transgressions by the Haryana Police against farmers in Punjab territory. In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister of Punjab, S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, the committee’s President, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, stated that the Haryana Police’s use of tear gas and rubber bullets towards farmers within Punjab’s borders constitutes a gross violation of law and state jurisdiction.
The letter condemns these measures as illegal and unconstitutional, stating that they resulted in grave injuries to the farmers, affecting even the elderly with harm to sensitive areas such as the eyes and head. It is highlighted that the actions of the Haryana Police are in breach of the farmers’ constitutional rights to peaceful protest, speech, and expression, as well as their right to life and personal liberty.
The Congress leader urges the Chief Minister to initiate a First Information Report (FIR) against the Home Minister of Haryana, Anil Vij, under whose direction the police allegedly acted, as well as against the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Ambala and other involved officers. The letter insists that the national highway, as a property of the nation, allows every citizen, including farmers, the right to move freely without restraint—a right that has been compromised by these events.
The letter, which is also copied to Sh. Gaurav Yadav, IPS, Director General of Police, Punjab Police Headquarters, Chandigarh, signals a pressing demand for accountability and legal redress for what the Punjab Congress Committee views as an infringement of democratic rights and state sovereignty.
