Agency (New Delhi): A recent visit by Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav to the Siddhapeeth Baba Gauri Shanker Mahadev Mandir in Kannauj has stirred controversy. Following his visit, BJP workers were filmed cleaning the temple premises with Gangajal, which they claimed was necessary due to the alleged disrespectful behavior of some Muslim leaders who accompanied Yadav, including entering the temple with shoes.
The incident, captured in a viral video, shows BJP activists washing the temple area, asserting that the sanctity of the site was compromised. Shivendra Kumar Gwal, the BJP city president, criticized the visit, labeling Yadav as an “electoral Hindu” and highlighted that non-Sanatanis are traditionally not permitted in the temple as indicated by signage.
In retaliation, SP leader I.P. Singh defended Yadav on social media platform X, accusing the BJP of discrimination. Singh claimed the BJP’s actions reflect a bias against backward classes, Dalits, and other marginalized groups, suggesting that the purification act was a targeted insult. He vowed that these communities would unite against the BJP in the ongoing elections.
The controversy unfolds as the Lok Sabha elections progress, with Yadav contesting from the Kannauj seat under the INDIA alliance banner, spotlighting the tense interplay of religion and politics in the electoral battle.
