Agency(New Delhi): Birender Singh, alongside his wife Prem Lata, has marked a significant return to the Congress party this Tuesday, ten years after their departure for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This political comeback aligns closely with their son Brijendra Singh’s recent shift to Congress, intensifying the family’s collective ideological realignment.
At 78 years old, Birender Singh is not just a seasoned political figure in Haryana but also the maternal grandson of notable farmer leader Sir Chhotu Ram. He had initially left Congress in 2014 to join the BJP, where he served as the Union Minister for Steel, and held responsibilities in the rural development, panchayati raj, and drinking water and sanitation sectors under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.
His decision to leave the BJP was announced just a day prior to his formal re-entry into Congress, reflecting a full-circle return to his political roots. Birender Singh characterized his move as not just a ‘ghar wapsi’ (homecoming), but also a ‘vichar wapsi’ (return to one’s ideological roots).
The re-induction of Birender and Prem Lata Singh was met with enthusiasm within the Congress, highlighted by statements from senior party leaders. Mukul Wasnik expressed confidence that their return would strengthen the party’s position in Haryana and support efforts to secure a state government under Congress leadership. Additionally, former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda welcomed Birender Singh back into the fold, emphasizing the deep personal and professional bonds that define their relationship.
