Agency(New Delhi):Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, currently incarcerated in Tihar Jail in connection with an alleged excise scam, was administered insulin for his high blood sugar levels, as reported by AAP sources. This medical intervention came after significant public and legal scrutiny over his health care needs while in custody.
According to AAP, Kejriwal’s blood sugar had escalated to 320, prompting urgent medical attention. The jail administration, however, has not yet commented on this development. The situation gained more visibility after AAP leaders took to social media to discuss the circumstances surrounding the insulin administration.
AAP Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj highlighted the challenges faced by Kejriwal in receiving necessary health care, criticizing the current administration for equating the treatment of the Chief Minister with that of other prisoners, and questioning the equity of medical access in Tihar Jail. Atishi, another prominent AAP leader, attributed Kejriwal’s received care to divine intervention and public support, linking it to the blessings of Hanuman on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti.
This development follows a recent court decision where a Delhi court judge denied Kejriwal’s request for daily consultations with a private doctor via video conferencing for his diabetes management, though it affirmed that he should receive adequate medical care. The court also mentioned that specialized consultations could be arranged with a medical panel from AIIMS Delhi if required.
The discourse surrounding Kejriwal’s health care in judicial custody raises significant questions about medical rights and treatment of high-profile prisoners in India, reflecting broader concerns about the handling of health issues within the penal system.
