Agency(New Delhi): In a significant medical breakthrough, the pediatric cardiology team at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral), Delhi Cantt, has performed a high-risk transcatheter cardiac procedure on an eight-year-old civilian boy from Baramullah, Jammu & Kashmir. This non-surgical intervention successfully treated a critical narrowing of the aorta, which had been compromising the blood supply to vital organs and reducing heart function.
The procedure, noted for its complexity, was performed through a minor incision in the groin and involved the implantation of a large stent. Despite the life-threatening risks associated with such an intricate procedure, it was completed without any complications. Remarkably, the child was discharged just three days post-procedure, without any physical scarring.
The boy’s treatment was facilitated under Operation Sadbhavna in Jammu & Kashmir, with the Indian Army Dagger Division bringing him to the center due to his family’s inability to afford the medical care required. This effort was supported by a collaboration between the Army Hospital (R&R), New Delhi, Chinaar Corps/Dagger Division, J&K, and the Indrani Balan Foundation, Pune, ensuring the boy a chance at a normal life ahead.
The capability to perform such advanced procedures is available at only a few centers across the country, with the Army Hospital (R&R), Delhi Cantt, being among them. This successful operation not only highlights the exceptional skill and dedication of the AFMS team but also underscores the comprehensive medical support provided by the armed forces to civilians, particularly those from underserved regions.
