Agency (Ahmedabad): Police have arrested 35 individuals following a clash between two groups at the Pirana shrine near Ahmedabad. The conflict erupted after the graves of a Sufi saint, Imamshah Bawa, and his family members were flattened, according to officials.
The incident took place on Tuesday night when differences among trustees of the Imamshah Bawa Roza Trust led to the demolition of the graves. The Pirana shrine, known for its symbol of Hindu-Muslim amity, is managed by trustees from both communities.
Ahmedabad (Rural) Superintendent of Police Omprakash Jat stated, “Due to some differences, one of the trustees razed to the ground the graves of Sufi saint Imamshah Bawa and his family members at the Pirana shrine on Tuesday night, leading to members of two communities hurling stones at each other.”
As news of the incident spread, large numbers of people from both communities gathered at the shrine. Despite the police’s efforts to maintain law and order, the two sides engaged in stone-pelting, resulting in injuries to several individuals, including police personnel.
Complaints were filed from both sides against unidentified individuals. The arrested individuals face charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including attempt to murder, rioting, and damage to public property.
Following the arrests, the police conducted patrolling in the area to ensure the situation remained under control. The incident highlights the sensitivity and potential for communal tension surrounding religious sites and their management.
