New Delhi: The Ministry of Textiles has announced that the prestigious Handicraft Awards for the years 2023 and 2024 will be conferred on December 9 as part of the National Handicrafts Week celebrations. The awards honour master craftspersons whose exceptional artistry has significantly contributed to India’s cultural heritage.

Celebrating Excellence in Indian Handicrafts
Instituted in 1965, the National Handicrafts Awards recognise outstanding artisans whose craftsmanship reflects India’s rich artistic traditions. The Shilp Guru Awards, introduced in 2002, represent the highest honour in the sector, celebrating craft masters who have demonstrated extraordinary skill, innovation, and dedication to preserving India’s diverse craft forms.
National Handicrafts Week, observed every year from December 8 to 14, highlights the cultural and socio-economic importance of the handicraft sector. The week-long celebration features:
Exhibitions of exceptional craftsmanship
Thematic workshops and capacity-building programmes
Live craft demonstrations
Panel discussions and outreach initiatives
Cultural performances honouring artisan traditions
Handicrafts: A Pillar of Heritage and Livelihood
India’s handicraft sector not only preserves centuries-old traditions but also supports millions of livelihoods, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions. The sector contributes significantly to export earnings and remains a critical driver of cultural and economic sustainability.
The Ministry of Textiles reaffirmed its commitment to empowering artisans through initiatives focused on:
Skill enhancement and technological support
Financial and institutional strengthening
Better domestic and international market access
Recognition of excellence through national honours
With the celebration of National Handicrafts Week and the conferment of the 2025 Handicraft Awards, the Government aims to elevate India’s craft legacy, strengthen artisan communities, and ensure that traditional crafts continue to flourish in the modern era.
