Bijapur: At least six Maoists were killed in an ongoing encounter with security forces in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, officials confirmed.

According to police, multiple gunfights broke out between security forces (SFs) and Maoist insurgents in a forest area about six kilometres west of Kandulnar village, under the Modakpal Police Station limits.

“During the continuing operation, the forces recovered the bodies of six Maoist cadres from the site of the encounter. The identities of the deceased are being verified,” officials said.

Security forces have launched intensive search and combing operations in the surrounding forest to ensure the area is fully sanitised and to locate any remaining Maoist operatives.

The Bijapur Police confirmed that several contingents of state and central security forces are currently engaged in coordinated anti-Naxal operations in the district. Weapons and other materials have also been recovered from the spot.

Further details are awaited as the operation remains underway.
