New Delhi: The Lok Sabha is set to hold a special discussion today on ‘Operation Sindoor’, India’s military retaliation following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 civilians dead.
According to the official List of Business for the day, the Lower House will deliberate on India’s strong, successful, and decisive response through Operation Sindoor, which involved precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir(PoJK).
A heated debate is expected in Parliament between the ruling NDA and the Opposition parties. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to initiate the discussion, while Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and BJP MPs Anurag Thakur and Nishikant Dubey are also expected to participate.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi may also intervene during the debate in both Houses, according to government sources. The Rajya Sabha is scheduled to take up the discussion on Tuesday, July 29.
From the Opposition, TDP MPs Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and GM Harish Balayogi will speak during the discussion, with the party allotted 30 minutes. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and MP Rajiv Rai are also set to participate.
The discussion comes amid heightened political tensions and disruptions during the first week of the Monsoon Session, which also saw the surprise resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that the debate on Operation Sindoor will span 16 hours each in the Lok Sabha (July 28) and Rajya Sabha (July 29). He added that other issues, such as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, will be discussed separately.
The Opposition has been pressing the government for a clarification on the operation and has also sought a response to US President Donald Trump’s recent claim of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Meanwhile, leaders of the INDIA bloc will meet at 10 AM today to finalize their strategy for the second week of the Monsoon Session.
