Kannur: An investigation is ongoing following the recent seizure of mobile phones from Kannur Central Jail, according to Kannur City Police Commissioner P. Nidhin Raj. The police have received preliminary information suggesting that the phones were smuggled into the prison through various means.
During a routine inspection, jail staff discovered two smartphones hidden behind the first cell in the prison’s tenth block. This brings the total number of phones seized from the facility in the past week to five.
Commissioner Raj stated that in some cases, mobile phones have been thrown over the prison walls from outside. He added that strict checks are conducted on inmates during court transfers to prevent contraband smuggling.
Addressing the media, Commissioner Raj said, “There have been several incidents involving the seizure of electronic devices, including mobile phones. The town police have registered cases, and while some leads have been ruled out, others are still under investigation. Two cases were filed last month at the Kannur Town Police Station.”
Police and prison authorities are jointly handling the investigation. The seized devices are undergoing forensic analysis to gather evidence and identify those involved.
“Many such incidents have been reported by the prison superintendent,” Raj said. “Each case is being examined individually. We are following multiple leads, and further details will be shared once the investigation is complete.”
