Agency(New Delhi): The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in collaboration with the Food Safety Department of Delhi, has begun a comprehensive awareness campaign aimed at major markets throughout Delhi to promote food safety. The campaign launched on April 8th, 2024, starting with Khan Market and INA Market.
The initiative primarily addresses the presence of pesticide residues and contaminants in food items, with a special focus on fruits, vegetables, milk, and cereals. Market traders and associations were involved in sessions that highlighted the dangers of pesticide residues and the importance of conducting tests to detect them.
Participants were introduced to the “Food Safety on Wheel” mobile lab—an innovative project by FSSAI featuring rapid testing kits capable of identifying around 50 different pesticide residues. These tests produce results within a few hours, allowing for quick responses to ensure food safety.
Additionally, the campaign emphasized the importance of using FSSAI licensed or registered vendors for sourcing raw materials, ensuring traceability and compliance with food safety standards. Traders were also educated on the negative impacts of using unapproved chemicals for artificial ripening and wax coating of produce and the benefits of organic farming.
The event stressed the collective responsibility of maintaining food safety, encapsulating it with the mantra “Food Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility”. It also underscored the pivotal role each stakeholder in the food supply chain plays in promoting a healthier India. Through such initiatives, FSSAI reaffirms its commitment to uphold public health by enforcing strict food safety regulations across the nation.
