Agency(New Delhi): Embracing the vision of net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, as articulated in the Prime Minister’s ‘Panchamrit’ pledge at COP-26, the Ministry of Coal has announced a proactive strategy to expand India’s renewable energy footprint significantly. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly energy practices, aimed at drastically reducing the carbon emissions associated with coal mining and usage. The Ministry has laid out an ambitious plan to achieve net-zero electricity consumption in Coal and Lignite Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) through a comprehensive enhancement of renewable energy capacity.
Key to this strategy is the promotion of rooftop and ground-mounted solar projects within coal mining areas, alongside the creative use of reclaimed mining land for solar park development. This dual approach not only capitalizes on the potential of solar energy but also repurposes underused land for clean energy generation, aligning with India’s National Determined Contributions (NDC) to derive 50% of its electric power from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030.
To date, significant strides have been made towards this goal, with leading coal companies, including Coal India Limited (CIL), NLC India Limited (NLCIL), and SCCL, collectively achieving an installed solar capacity of approximately 1700 MW. This is bolstered by an additional 51 MW from wind energy, highlighting a dedicated shift towards diverse renewable energy sources. The coal sector’s ambitious target to exceed 9 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 reflects a deep-seated commitment to sustainability and a cleaner environment.
The net-zero electricity consumption initiative promises substantial environmental and economic benefits. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels and cutting carbon emissions, it contributes directly to the fight against climate change and the preservation of the environment. Moreover, the focus on renewable energy fosters technological innovation, driving economic growth and creating new employment opportunities in the green energy sector. This initiative represents a pivotal step in India’s journey towards a green economy, marking a significant transition in the energy landscape that is expected to benefit both current and future generations.
The Ministry of Coal’s dedication to innovation and excellence in sustainable energy practices is evident in its “Net Zero” electricity consumption plan. This initiative sets a benchmark for other sectors to follow, underscoring the Ministry’s role in steering India towards a more sustainable, competitive, and environmentally responsible future. Through these efforts, the Ministry aims not only to contribute to a greener India but also to enhance the nation’s socio-economic development and global standing in the realm of sustainable energy.
