New Delhi (Agency): On Sunday, a man suspected of working as a spy for the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency of Pakistan was apprehended in Uttar Pradesh, India. Authorities believe he had been providing vital details about Indian military installations to his contacts in Pakistan.
The suspect, known as Raees, is a resident of Gonda. He was taken into custody by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), according to an official statement. Prashant Kumar, Special DG (Law and Order), revealed during the announcement that “during interrogation, Raees confessed to his involvement in spying”.
The story of Raees’s involvement in spying began in Mumbai, where he met a man named Armaan. As per the police report, Armaan convinced Raees to work against India. Raees was enticed with the promise of money and a job opportunity in Dubai, offered by a Pakistani citizen.
In 2022, Raees was contacted via a WhatsApp call from an international number. He was asked to get in touch with a person named Hussain and was instructed to take and send pictures of key military establishments in India. Police also mentioned the involvement of one Salman and an unidentified man in the alleged crime.
Raees, according to police officials, received Rs 15,000 for his activities and had been communicating with the ISI through a mobile number registered in Bangladesh.
The police have registered an FIR against Raees at the Lucknow ATS police station. He has been charged under IPC sections 121 A and 123, which refer to “waging or attempting to wage war” and “concealing with intent to facilitate design to wage war”, respectively. He is also being charged under the Officials Secrets Act, 1923. The police stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend Armaan and Salman.
