Agency(New Delhi): The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Friday expressed strong criticism of the current government, stating that under Prime Minister Modi’s “Amrit Kaal,” agriculture has turned into a non-profitable venture. The organization accused the Prime Minister of merely paying lip service and failing to address the real issues faced by farmers and the rural poor.
The SKM highlighted the widespread public outrage following the death of a young farmer at the Kannouri border, noting that the observance of Black Day/Aakrosh Day mirrors the intense emotions of the protesting populace.
According to the SKM, there have been reports from across India of the effigy burning of key political figures, including Union Minister Amit Shah, Haryana Chief Minister ML Khattar, and Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij. The protests have seen extensive participation from women and youth, with torchlight processions being a common sight in villages and towns.
The organization lauded the Punjab Government’s decision to award Rs 1 crore and a job to the family of the deceased farmer. The SKM further reiterated its call for a Supreme Court judge to lead a judicial inquiry into the farmer’s killing, the firing incident, and the damage caused to tractors.
In its statement, the SKM also targeted Prime Minister Modi, citing RBI data to claim that Gujarat pays the lowest wage to farmers, despite the Prime Minister’s repeated assurances and his leadership roles in Gujarat and as the nation’s Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, farmers continue their protest, demanding the central government fulfill their requests, including legal assurance for minimum support prices (MSP) for crops and debt forgiveness. Since February 13, farmers have been camping at border points with their vehicles, demanding attention to their grievances.
Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan, addressing the feasibility of the farmers’ demands, stated that farmers are receiving adequate payment for their crops under the BJP-led government, highlighting the introduction of pensions for farmers under PM Modi’s rule. The Governor expressed confusion over the continuous agitation, particularly from Punjab, despite the government’s efforts to increase support prices and procurement.
