New Delhi (Agency): On August 9th, in Rajasthan, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sharply criticized the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the ongoing violence in Manipur. He stated that the BJP’s ideology is the cause of the unrest, and if the Prime Minister wished, he could end the conflict within a few days.
Speaking at a party rally in Mangarh Dham, located in Rajasthan’s Banswara district, Gandhi expressed his concerns about Manipur. He mentioned, “The ideology of the BJP has set Manipur on fire. People are being killed…women are raped….” He further alleged, “If Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants, the fire in Manipur can be doused in two-three days, but he wants to keep the fire raging.”
Manipur, a northeastern state in India, has been in turmoil since May 3rd. The conflict revolves around ethnic tensions between the major Meiteis group and the tribal Kuki community. Unfortunately, this has led to the tragic deaths of over 150 individuals.
Gandhi’s speech in Rajasthan was especially significant as it marked the beginning of the Congress party’s campaign for the upcoming assembly elections in the state. The rally itself was organized to commemorate World Tribal Day, a day that celebrates the culture and rights of tribal communities.
One focal point of Gandhi’s address was the terminology used by the BJP to describe tribal individuals. He criticized the BJP for referring to tribal people as “Vanvasi” instead of “Adivasi.” For many, the term “Adivasi” recognizes and honors the original inhabitants of India. Gandhi expressed his disapproval, stating that using the term “Vanvasi” is an “insult” to these communities. He further alleged that the BJP “snatches their jungles and gives them to Adani,” a leading business conglomerate in India.
In contrast, Gandhi emphasized the Congress party’s dedication to supporting tribal populations. He stated that Congress aims to ensure that tribal communities receive their rightful entitlements and that their dreams and aspirations are realized.
