Agency (New Delhi): On the occasion of International Epilepsy Day, observed on the second Monday of February each year, a series of public awareness programs were conducted throughout various regions in India. These events, organized by the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment through its National Institutes and Composite Regional Centres (CRCs), took place on February 12, 2024. The aim was to educate and sensitize the public about epilepsy, a medical condition often misunderstood as a curse.
In Secunderabad, the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID) conducted awareness sessions for parents, caregivers, students, and staff. These sessions focused on fostering empathy and increasing knowledge about managing epilepsy. An online webinar also facilitated discussions among parents, teachers, and professionals in disability rehabilitation.
NIEPID Regional Centre (RC) in Noida organized activities including awareness sessions, quiz competitions, and screenings of epilepsy awareness videos, specifically targeting students to promote a culture of inclusivity and understanding.
In Gorakhpur, the CRC conducted a day-long public awareness program to educate the community about epilepsy and its effective management. This initiative aimed to reduce stigma and encourage empathy towards those living with epilepsy.
The CRC in Davangere hosted a webinar titled “Care of a Child with Epilepsy,” where experts shared insights and strategies to support children with epilepsy, fostering a supportive and understanding environment.
Similarly, the Comprehensive Regional Centre in Tripura and the National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped Regional Centre (NIMHR) in Sehore also undertook initiatives to raise awareness about epilepsy through various programs.
These awareness programs reflect the government’s commitment to dispelling myths and promoting acceptance and understanding of epilepsy. By focusing on education and empathy, these initiatives strive to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals living with epilepsy.
