Agency(Odisha): On March 1, 2024, the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, attended and delivered an address at the 25th convocation ceremony of Berhampur University, located in Bhanja Bihar, Ganjam, Odisha.
During her speech, President Murmu emphasized the significant role of Odisha’s southern region in both the state’s and the country’s history, acknowledging its contributions to education, literature, arts, and crafts. She celebrated the region as the homeland of renowned poets like Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja and Kabisurya Baladev Rath, who have made substantial contributions to Odia and Indian literature. Additionally, the President recognized the area’s historical significance as the birthplace and work ground of numerous freedom fighters, martyrs, and public servants.
Berhampur University, founded in 1967, stands as the oldest institution of higher learning in southern Odisha. President Murmu commended the university for its pivotal role in the educational and developmental advancements of this predominantly tribal region.
Highlighting the student demographics, the President shared that approximately 45,000 students are enrolled in the university’s Postgraduate Departments and affiliated colleges, with over 55 percent being female students. Remarkably, 60 percent of the gold medal recipients are women, and half of the doctoral degrees awarded during the convocation went to female researchers, showcasing an exemplary achievement in gender equality.
President Murmu pointed out the evident potential of girls to excel in various fields, given equal opportunities. She noted the increasing participation of women in diverse sectors, including science, technology, law enforcement, and the military, indicating a shift towards women-led development.
Addressing the graduates, the President emphasized that convocation is not merely a ceremony to receive degrees but a celebration of their dedication and success, opening doors to new opportunities and dreams. She encouraged continuous learning and urged the graduates to utilize their knowledge and skills for the benefit of others and contribute to nation-building.
