New Delhi (Agency): In the midst of nationwide shock regarding a horrifying event in Manipur, where two women were shamefully paraded naked, N Biren Singh, the Chief Minister, has urged cybercrime officials to confirm the legitimacy of the widely shared video.
The video pertains to a two-month-old incident that has recently gone viral, prompting widespread indignation and drawing fierce reactions from numerous political parties. “After viewing the video, I felt an immediate need to investigate the incident. This atrocity took place on May 3, and the incident involving tribal women occurred the next day, on May 4. But this video was leaked 47 days later. I was profoundly shocked. I vehemently condemn this act. This is an abominable crime against humanity. The state government will not stay silent,” the Chief Minister expressed his outrage to ANI.
In response to the video, he ordered for extensive searches to be conducted in potential areas related to the incident. “I also requested cybercrime officials to verify the authenticity of the video,” he added. The Chief Minister affirmed that the state government will leave no stone unturned to ensure capital punishment for those accused.
On Twitter, Chief Minister N Biren Das promised firm action against all those involved, including the possibility of capital punishment. “The Manipur Police swung into action immediately after taking cognizance of the incident. A thorough investigation is currently underway, and we will make sure that severe action is taken against all culprits. Let it be known that there is no room for such dreadful acts in our society,” the Chief Minister shared via tweet.
Later the Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced that the state police have made their first arrest in the case, declaring, “Last night at around 1.30 am, we arrested the main culprit.”
Female leaders and members of the Congress Party organized a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, demanding the resignation of Manipur’s Chief Minister, N Biren Singh. This demand comes in response to a controversial video that has been widely circulated in Manipur.
During the demonstration at Jantar Mantar, the Congress women raised their voices, chanting demands for the Chief Minister’s resignation and displaying signs stating, “We want peace in Manipur.”
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court of India expressed its deep disturbance at the video’s contents. The footage shows two tribal women being paraded naked and molested. The court called for both the Centre and State to act against those responsible. The Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, along with Justices P.S. Narasimha and Manoj Misra, said it was “simply unacceptable” to use women as instruments of violence.
The court took note of the video that had gone viral and asked the Centre and State to inform them about the measures taken. The Chief Justice stated, “Simply unacceptable. Using women as an instrument in an area of communal strife to inflict gender violence is deeply disturbing. This is the grossest of constitutional abuse and human rights violations. We are deeply disturbed by the videos which have emerged. If the government does not act, we will.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reacted to the incident, expressing his deep distress and called the incident “shameful for any civil society.” He ensured that “No accused will be spared, we will never forgive those who are behind this.”
