New Delhi (Agency): The central government of India is taking concrete steps to ensure the safety and security of journalists in the country. Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, informed the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian Parliament) that the government is in the process of finalizing a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the protection of journalists. This move comes as part of the government’s commitment to prioritize the safety of all residents, including media professionals.
In response to a written question, Rai stated, “(The) central government is in the process of finalizing a standard operating procedure in this regard, in consultation with various agencies/stakeholders.” This indicates that the government is actively engaging with different stakeholders, including media organizations and experts, to develop a comprehensive SOP that will address the safety concerns of journalists.
Furthermore, Rai highlighted that the Ministry of Home Affairs has previously issued advisories to states and Union Territories to maintain law and order and to ensure that any individual taking the law into their own hands is swiftly punished. Specifically, on October 20, 2017, an advisory was issued to prioritize the safety of journalists. This advisory urged states and Union Territories to enforce the law strictly and take necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of mediapersons.
The safety of journalists is crucial for the smooth functioning of a democratic society. Journalists play a vital role in keeping the public informed about current events and holding those in power accountable. However, they often face risks and challenges while reporting from the ground. They may encounter dangerous situations, hostile environments, and even violence while carrying out their duties.
By finalizing a comprehensive SOP for the safety of journalists, the government aims to create a safer environment for media professionals to perform their duties without fear or intimidation. This step is likely to be welcomed by media organizations and journalist bodies who have been advocating for better protection and support for journalists.
In conclusion, the central government’s initiative to develop an SOP for the safety and security of journalists is a positive step towards safeguarding the freedom of the press and ensuring the safety of those who bring news to the public. As this SOP takes shape, it is expected to provide guidelines and protocols that will enhance the protection of journalists and foster a conducive environment for a free and vibrant media landscape in India.
