New Delhi (Agency): The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), responsible for overseeing the Income Tax Department, has issued an official order detailing specific roles for its new members.
CBDT plays an important part in India’s financial system. They manage tasks like collecting revenue from various direct taxes. This includes personal income tax and corporate tax.
Four new members joined the CBDT about a month ago, and now their roles are clear:
– Pravin Kumar is now in charge of “Income Tax and Revenue.”
– Harinder Bir Singh Gill will handle “Tax Payer Services.”
– Sanjai Kumar Verma will be responsible for “Systems and Faceless Schemes.”
– Ravi Agrawal has been given the role of “Administration.”
These members officially became part of the CBDT on July 5.
Additionally, two other officials, Pragya Sahay Saksena and Subashree Anantakrishnan, both from the 1987 batch of officers, have been given their own responsibilities. Saksena is now the “Member (Legislation)” while Anantakrishnan takes up the role of “Member (Audit and Judicial).”
However, the recent order did not mention any specific individual for the position of “Member (Investigation).” This role is vital, as the person in this position oversees the country’s investigation directorates. These teams work hard to ensure that there’s no tax evasion. They carry out checks and balances, do searches, and conduct surveys. Additionally, they also supervise the directorate of intelligence and criminal investigation within the I-T department.
For now, the chairperson of CBDT, Nitin Gupta, will be supervising the work of investigation. It’s interesting to note that the CBDT, which is led by a chairperson, can have up to six members. These members hold a high position similar to a special secretary.
To give a glimpse into the background of these members:
– Both Kumar and Gill belong to the 1987 batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre).
– Verma and Agrawal hail from the 1988 batch.
– Saksena, Anantakrishnan, and the CBDT’s head, Gupta, are from the 1987 and 1986 batches respectively, with Gupta being the most senior.
With these new assignments, it’s expected that the CBDT will continue its mission to ensure proper tax collection and maintain financial order in the country.
