Port Blair (Agency): The beaches of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are gearing up for more activity as the administration unveils plans to introduce over 150 shacks along the coast. This move comes in response to feedback from tourists who have expressed the desire for livelier beach experiences even after sunset.
As of now, many beaches restrict tourists from venturing close to the sea at night. In light of this, the administration is planning to issue permits for beach shacks to enhance the overall beach atmosphere and cater to the preferences of tourists.
The proposed plan includes granting permits for 20 beach shacks on Havelock Island and 40 shacks on Neil Island. These shacks will be strategically placed to create a more vibrant beach ambiance.
Jatinder Sohal, Director of the Tourism Department, shared that the plan includes setting up 10 beach shacks in Kalapathar, 15 in Elephanta, and five in Sitapur on Havelock Island. On Neil Island, 20 shacks will be established on Laxmanpur and Bharatpur beaches.
The initiative aims to address the presence of unauthorized hawkers and temporary shacks that have emerged haphazardly on popular beaches. These unauthorized structures not only affect the aesthetic appeal of the beaches but also raise concerns about environmental sustainability and ecosystem preservation.
Sohal emphasized that the introduction of beach shacks will not only enhance the beach experience but also contribute to revenue generation and employment opportunities for local residents. These shacks will offer a blend of food, wine, and music, providing a comprehensive coastal experience for visitors.
The design of the shacks will harmonize with the surrounding environment, utilizing local and natural materials such as bamboo, wood, thatch, and palm fronds. This approach ensures that the rustic appearance of the shacks aligns with the natural beauty of the beaches.
Beach shacks are a common feature in coastal destinations worldwide and contribute to the overall charm and appeal of such locations.
The permits for establishing these beach shacks will be issued following inspections by officials from the Tourism Department and the District Level Committees of the Andaman Nicobar Coastal Zone Management Authority. The administration emphasizes that any shack found engaging in discriminatory practices based on nationality, sex, caste, religion, or race will have their permits revoked.
The introduction of beach shacks promises to inject liveliness and enhanced experiences into the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ beaches. This initiative not only caters to the desires of tourists but also supports local economy and employment opportunities while ensuring harmony with the natural surroundings.
