Agency(New Delhi): Today, Smt Droupadi Murmu, the President of India, inaugurated the 37th edition of the Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Surajkund, Haryana. The President emphasized that this fair is not only a celebration of cultural diversity but also a fusion of tradition and innovation. The Surajkund Mela serves as a vital platform for connecting craftsmen with art enthusiasts, functioning both as an art exhibition and a business hub.
Highlighting the universal language of art and craft, the President remarked on their ability to transcend borders and foster mutual understanding. She acknowledged artists and craftspeople as the creative ambassadors of humanity. In her speech, she expressed her delight at Gujarat being the partner state for this year’s event, recognizing its rich artistic traditions. Additionally, she was pleased to announce the North-Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation as the cultural partner for the Mela.
The President expressed admiration for the artisans’ role in preserving India’s artistic heritage. She lauded the skills of craftsmen and sculptors in bringing life to materials like clay and stone, the vibrant creations of painters, the intricate work of metal and wood craftsmen, and the beauty woven into textiles by imaginative weavers. These artisans are seen as both creators and custodians of India’s civilization and culture.
She noted with satisfaction that Tanzania is the partner nation for this year’s Mela. This partnership is an excellent opportunity to exhibit Tanzanian dance, music, and cuisine, reflecting the historical people-to-people contact between India and the East African coast. The President emphasized that Tanzania’s participation as the partner nation underscores India’s engagement with the African Union.
