Varanasi: Defence expert Sanjeev Srivastava hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Canada, emphasising that India-Canada relations are now on the path to recovery. This development follows PM Modi’s meeting with newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the 51st G7 Summit.
Srivastava highlighted that the decision to reinstate High Commissioners in both countries marks a key step towards restoring diplomatic ties. “The diplomatic strain had worsened after former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made unfounded accusations against India regarding the death of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar,” he said. “The previous Canadian government’s inaction against pro-Khalistani elements further deepened tensions.”
However, Srivastava noted a change in tone with the new leadership in Canada. “PM Modi’s visit and his meeting with PM Carney have set a positive tone. India’s invitation to the G7 summit and the warm reception accorded to PM Modi in Canada indicate a shift towards rebuilding mutual trust.”
During their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, PM Modi and PM Carney discussed ways to stabilize and strengthen India-Canada relations. According to a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the discussions were open and forward-looking, focusing on mutual concerns and aspirations.
The leaders emphasized the value of the India-Canada partnership, anchored in democratic values, rule of law, respect for sovereignty, and strong people-to-people connections. Both sides agreed to adopt “calibrated and constructive” steps to normalize relations, starting with the early return of High Commissioners to New Delhi and Ottawa.
This meeting marked the first face-to-face interaction between the two leaders following Canada’s recent elections and signals a renewed commitment to rebuilding bilateral ties through dialogue, mutual respect, and cooperation.
