Cachar: Assam Police have arrested a man from Cachar district for allegedly posing as a doctor and operating an illegal clinic, officials said on Tuesday.
According to police, the accused was running the unauthorized clinic in the Sonai area of Cachar district. Acting on a tip-off, a team from the district police apprehended the suspect from Nagdirgram Part-4 village on Monday.
Partha Protim Das, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Cachar, confirmed the arrest and said the crackdown on fake medical practitioners has been intensified across the district. “He was running an illegal clinic under the Sonai police station area. All necessary documents have been seized lawfully, and appropriate legal action has been initiated,” SSP Das said.
He added that an investigation into the case is currently underway.
Earlier, another individual had been arrested in connection with a similar case at Silchar police station. During the investigation, police uncovered evidence of a larger network involving fake medical institutions issuing counterfeit degrees and certificates.
A senior official revealed that the same network was providing fraudulent medical qualifications to unqualified individuals, allowing them to practice illegally. “These certificates hold no legal recognition under any Act. The prime accused and several others received fake certificates from this unapproved institution, which had no authorization from the National Medical Council (NMC) or other competent authorities,” the official said.
The accused allegedly exploited the medical profession for personal financial gain, operating a syndicate of fake colleges and quack practitioners. “His actions endangered public health and eroded trust in the medical system. He is believed to be the mastermind behind this organized crime,” the official added.
The accused has been placed under police remand as investigations continue.
