Agency(New Delhi): The Department of School Education and Literacy, under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, is poised to carry out the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Test (FLNAT) on the 17th of March, 2024. This nationwide evaluation, part of the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, will see participation from approximately 37 lakh learners across 23 states, signifying a monumental step towards educational reform and literacy enhancement in the country.
The FLNAT is slated to take place in every district of the involved states and union territories, with District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs), along with Government and aided schools, serving as venues for the test. This assessment, encompassing Reading, Writing, and Numeracy, each section carrying a weight of 50 marks for a cumulative total of 150 marks, is meticulously designed to gauge the foundational literacy and numeracy competencies of the registered non-literate learners.
The upcoming test follows the successful administration of two FLNATs in 2023, which saw substantial participation and certification of learners. The test, which will be conducted in the regional languages of the participants, aligns with the National Education Policy 2020’s emphasis on multilingualism and the use of mother tongues or local languages as mediums of instruction, furthering the goal of linguistic diversity preservation.
This iteration of the FLNAT sees certain union territories, including Chandigarh, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and Goa, aiming for a declaration of 100 percent literacy, marking a significant milestone in their educational achievements. The outcome of this assessment will serve as a crucial indicator of the effectiveness of the teaching-learning sessions conducted under the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram. Successful participants will be awarded a certificate by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), acknowledging their proficiency in foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
The FLNAT, set for the 17th of March, 2024, underscores a pivotal advancement in India’s journey towards achieving the vision of a developed nation with universal literacy. The ULLAS initiative continues to make significant strides in elevating the literacy rates across India, demonstrating the nation’s commitment to educational excellence and societal progress.
