Agency(Gujarat): Gujarat University has instructed seven international students to leave their hostel accommodations due to overstaying, a university official announced. This directive includes six students from Afghanistan and one from East Africa. The decision was made public weeks after an incident where foreign students were assaulted for performing namaz on campus.
The university’s vice-chancellor, Neerja Gupta, confirmed the eviction of these students, noting that they had already completed their academic programs and were only remaining in the hostel due to pending administrative tasks. The attack on foreign students occurred on the night of March 16, during the month of Ramzan, prompting concern over their safety.
Following the assault, delegations from Afghanistan and Gambia met with the university administration to discuss safety measures. The university has now completed the necessary paperwork for the affected students, enabling them to return to their home countries.
Vice-Chancellor Gupta stated that the university has coordinated with the respective consulates and made arrangements for these students’ departure, emphasizing the policy against housing ex-students. Over 300 international students are currently enrolled at Gujarat University.
The hostile incident involved approximately two dozen individuals forcibly entering a hostel block and attacking students for their religious practices, leading to two students from Sri Lanka and Tajikistan requiring hospitalization. The university has since taken steps to address these safety issues and manage the accommodation of its international student body.
