New Delhi, January 7: Delhi Police on Wednesday confirmed that they are examining a complaint related to alleged sloganeering against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus.
According to police officials, the complaint was filed by the Chief Security Officer of JNU at Vasant Kunj North police station. Authorities said the matter is under scrutiny to determine the appropriate legal action.
“A complaint from the Chief Security Officer, JNU, has been received at PS Vasant Kunj North regarding sloganeering against the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister on the JNU campus. The same is being examined for necessary action,” Delhi Police said in a statement.
Earlier, the university administration had urged the police to register an FIR against students who allegedly raised “objectionable, provocative and inflammatory slogans” outside Sabarmati Hostel on Monday night.
As per an official letter issued by JNU’s security department, the incident took place during a programme organised by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) to mark the sixth anniversary of the January 5, 2020 campus violence. The event, titled “A Night of Resistance with Guerrilla Dhaba,” reportedly saw the participation of around 30–35 students.
The letter stated that while the gathering initially appeared to be a commemorative event, its nature allegedly changed following the Supreme Court’s verdict on the bail pleas of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. At that point, some students allegedly began raising slogans described as highly objectionable and inflammatory.
The university administration claimed the slogans amounted to contempt of the Supreme Court, violated the JNU Code of Conduct, and posed a potential threat to campus harmony and public order. It further alleged that the slogans were deliberate and repeatedly raised, reflecting intentional misconduct rather than spontaneous expression.
The Chief Security Officer has requested the Station House Officer of Vasant Kunj North to register an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
On Monday, the Supreme Court denied bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in a case related to the alleged larger conspiracy behind the 2020 north-east Delhi riots.
