Washington/Jerusalem: In a dramatic intervention into Israeli domestic affairs, former U.S. President Donald Trump has called for the “immediate cancellation” of the ongoing trial of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, describing the charges against him as “politically motivated”.
In a statement that is likely to spark diplomatic debate, Trump said,
“Netanyahu is a great leader. His trial is a disgrace, and the United States must step in — we will save him.”
The comment was made during a campaign stop in Florida, where Trump criticized what he termed the “global deep state”, suggesting that both he and Netanyahu are victims of politically driven legal persecution.
Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, is currently facing multiple corruption charges, including fraud and breach of trust. The trial, which has been ongoing since 2020, has remained a flashpoint in Israeli politics, fuelling mass protests and controversy around judicial reforms proposed by his government.
Trump’s remarks drew mixed reactions. Some right-wing Israeli lawmakers welcomed the support, while critics accused the former U.S. president of interfering in a sovereign judicial process.
Israeli officials have not formally responded to Trump’s statement. However, legal experts in both countries have noted that the Israeli judiciary remains independent and is unlikely to be influenced by external political pressure.
The remarks come at a time of heightened U.S.–Israel diplomatic tension and amid rising regional instability in West Asia.
