Agency(Kota): Kota, a city renowned for its competitive exam coaching centers, has witnessed yet another heartbreaking incident, with a 19-year-old NEET aspirant taking her own life. This tragedy, occurring late Wednesday night, marks the seventh student suicide in the city since the year’s start, as confirmed by the police on Thursday.
Somya Kurmi was found deceased, having hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her paying guest (PG) room. This distressing event came just a day after Mohammad Urooj, another 20-year-old NEET student, was similarly discovered dead in his PG accommodation in Vigyan Nagar.
DSP Rajesh Tailor shared that upon Kurmi failing to respond or open her door, her concerned friends forcibly entered her room only to find the grim scene. Hailing from Amethi town in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow, Kurmi had been in Kota for over a year, rigorously preparing for the NEET exam at a local coaching institute. She had moved into the PG in Mahavir Nagar approximately a month ago.
Authorities have retrieved a note from Kurmi’s room, though its connection to the suicide is still under investigation. It was noted that Kurmi had experienced health issues earlier in the week, leading to her brief admission to MBS Hospital; she was discharged after one day.
Following a post-mortem examination, her remains were returned to her grieving parents, who had arrived in Kota by Thursday noon. A case has been registered based on the parents’ complaint, and investigations are ongoing, stated Jawahar Nagar SHO Kamlesh Kumar Sharma, who clarified that no suicide note was found in her room.
This incident underscores a troubling pattern of mental health crises among students in Kota, which reported 26 suspected cases of suicide among coaching students in the previous year.
