Agency (Kota): In a distressing development from Kota, known for its competitive exam coaching centers, a 20-year-old student preparing for the NEET examination was found deceased in his paying guest (PG) accommodation. This incident, occurring in the early hours between Monday and Tuesday, is the sixth suicide reported among coaching students in the city since the onset of January, as confirmed by local police authorities.
Mohammad Urooj, hailing from Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district, was discovered by police officers, suspended from a ceiling fan without any anti-suicide fixtures in his room, located in the Vigyan Nagar area. Station House Officer Satish Chaudhary of Vigyan Nagar relayed the unfortunate news, marking a continued series of similar incidents in the city. The previous year saw a total of 26 students taking their own lives, underscoring a grave concern regarding the mental health and pressure faced by students in Kota.
Urooj had been enrolled in a coaching institute for over a year and a half, rigorously preparing for the medical entrance exam scheduled in May. Despite completing his coaching classes, he continued his studies from his PG room, focusing intensely on his upcoming examinations.
Concerns were raised by Urooj’s parents after unsuccessful attempts to contact him on Tuesday morning led them to alert his friends and the accommodation’s security guard, who in turn informed the police. No farewell note was found at the scene, leaving the motive for his drastic decision uncertain until further investigation.
The young aspirant’s family has been notified of the tragic event, with arrangements being made for their arrival in Kota. This series of student suicides in the city calls for urgent attention to the pressures faced by those enrolled in coaching institutes, spotlighting the critical need for mental health support and preventive measures within the educational ecosystem.
