New Delhi (Agency): In a recent case of cyber fraud, a 42-year-old software professional from Thane district in Maharashtra fell victim to a scam that cost him ₹17.2 lakh. The two scammers approached the man, who is employed with a leading Indian IT firm, offering him an opportunity to earn easy money through a part-time job related to hotel bookings.
On August 3, the man and a woman involved in the scam sent the victim a link through the Telegram app to carry out the supposed job. Initially, they asked him to make a payment for registration. Over the following days, they persuaded him to pay more, promising easy earnings in return.
After extracting ₹17.28 lakh from the IT professional, the duo became elusive when he asked about the promised money. Realizing he had been scammed, the victim filed a complaint with the Ambernath police on Tuesday.
The police registered a case under the IT Act, naming the accused as Rahul Sharma and Sneha. The incident serves as a warning to others about the growing risk of cyber fraud and the importance of vigilance when engaging with unknown online contacts.
