Agency(Kota): In a heart-wrenching incident in Kota, the father of a NEET examination candidate who took his own life has pointed to a lack of safety measures at the paying guest (PG) accommodation as a critical oversight. The tragedy unfolded when 20-year-old Mohammad Urooj, originally from Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district, was discovered deceased in his room. Following a post-mortem, his remains were returned to his grieving family.
Satish Chaudhary, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Vigyan Nagar, confirmed that a formal investigation has been initiated based on the complaint lodged by Urooj’s father, Sabir Khan. The investigation aims to uncover the motives behind Urooj’s devastating decision. Notably, the absence of an “anti-suicide” device on the room’s ceiling fan has been highlighted as a significant concern.
Sabir Khan, in discussions with the media, assigned blame to the accommodation’s owner and management for not adhering to safety protocols, specifically their failure to install an anti-suicide mechanism on the fan. According to Khan, such a device could have averted his son’s death. Anti-suicide devices, which are engineered to collapse under weights exceeding 20 kilograms and trigger an alarm, are designed to prevent suicide attempts via hanging.
Despite no apparent signs of distress during their last conversation, Khan remains firm in his belief that his son’s demise was preventable. The local authorities have indicated that the PG owner may face repercussions for not complying with the stipulated safety guidelines.
The investigation is also exploring other aspects, including the possibility of a romantic relationship contributing to Urooj’s actions. No farewell note was found at the scene. This incident marks the sixth suicide by a coaching student in Kota since the beginning of the year, with the previous year’s total reaching 26. The community and authorities are once again faced with the urgent need to address mental health and safety measures among students in the coaching hub.
