The Aryavarth Express Katra (Jammu and Kashmir), April 10: Para archer Payal Nag, who overcame life-altering challenges to achieve international success, has credited her coaches and the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board for helping her bring glory to India.
Electrocuted at the age of eight and losing all four limbs, Payal, the daughter of a daily-wage mason from Odisha, has emerged as one of India’s most inspiring para-athletes. Demonstrating exceptional determination and resilience, she recently clinched gold at the World Para Archery Series in Bangkok. In a remarkable debut at the senior international level, she defeated reigning world champion and her idol, Sheetal Devi, 139–136 in the women’s para compound final.
Para archer Payal Nag ’s journey into archery began in an unconventional manner when coach Kuldeep Vedwan noticed her talent through her artwork. Recognising her potential, he brought her to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Archery Academy in Katra, where she began training with a specially designed bow.
The academy played a crucial role in her development, providing training, equipment, and essential support. Payal also secured another gold medal at the event, partnering with Sheetal Devi to win the women’s compound team title as India edged Kazakhstan 150–147.
Speaking about her journey, Para archer Payal Nag said the academy was where she first learned to handle a bow and arrow. She expressed gratitude to her coaches and the Shrine Board for their support, including providing her with a wheelchair that enabled her to travel and compete internationally. She also acknowledged the assistance extended in terms of accommodation, food, and equipment.
Archery coach Abhilasha Chaudhary praised the academy’s contribution to nurturing talent, stating that it has consistently produced top performers, including Arjuna Awardees and numerous international medal winners. She highlighted that the Shrine Board has played a significant role in promoting sports, making it a unique example of a religious institution contributing to athletic excellence.
From overcoming a devastating accident to standing atop the podium on the global stage, Payal Nag’s journey stands as a testament to courage, perseverance, and the power of support systems, inspiring aspiring athletes across the country.
