Review Overview

The Aryavarth Express New Delhi, March 26: Former senior diplomat Vidya Bhushan Soni has highlighted the complexities in ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, stating that conflicts cannot be resolved through unilateral declarations.

In a conversation with ANI, Vidya Bhushan Soni said Iran’s firm response to remarks made by US President Donald Trump on ceasefire negotiations was predictable, given the country’s deep-rooted history, culture, and strong national identity.

“Iran is a proud nation with an ancient civilisation and traditions. They are not influenced by theatrics,” he noted.

Criticising the US approach, Vidya Bhushan Soni described it as unrealistic for one side to decide the course of a conflict. “You cannot initiate action during negotiations and then attempt to call off the war on your own terms when things don’t go your way,” he said, adding, “It is not for the US to dictate terms. Every nation has its own agenda and strategy.”

Soni emphasized that while Iran may be open to dialogue, meaningful negotiations require adherence to established diplomatic protocols. He expressed surprise that the US, which claims to have one of the world’s most advanced diplomatic systems, appeared to overlook key nuances of engagement.

“If you are serious about resolving an issue, you must follow proper procedures and respect the other side’s sensitivities. Every country has self-respect, and negotiations cannot succeed if one side appears to impose its will,” he said.

He also drew attention to the wider global impact of such conflicts, warning that economic disruptions and humanitarian consequences disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, particularly in parts of Africa and Asia.

“The entire world suffers. Economies are destabilised, and poorer nations bear the brunt despite having no role in the conflict,” he said.

On India’s position, Vidya Bhushan Soni suggested that New Delhi should continue to support all diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation. Referring to recent discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump, he said India must back initiatives that promote peace, regardless of their origin.

“It is in the interest of global peace, humanity, and India itself to support any genuine effort to resolve the conflict,” he concluded.
