New Delhi: Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing to a close a distinguished chapter in the longest format of the game. The 38-year-old made the announcement via Instagram on Wednesday, thanking fans and reflecting on his journey in whites.
“Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format,” Rohit wrote in his Instagram story.
Rohit made his Test debut in 2013 and went on to play 67 matches for India, amassing 4,301 runs at an average of over 45. His red-ball career includes 12 centuries and 18 fifties, with a highest score of 212 against South Africa in 2019.
As captain, Rohit led India in 24 Tests, winning 12 and losing 9. While his leadership came under scrutiny following India’s underwhelming performance on the recent tour of Australia — which saw them miss out on a spot in the World Test Championship Final — he did guide the team to the final of the 2023 edition at The Oval.
Although stepping away from the Test arena, Rohit confirmed he will continue to be available for One Day Internationals, where he remains a key figure in India’s setup.
Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket marks the end of an era for Indian cricket, closing the book on the career of one of the most graceful and impactful batters to wear the whites.
