Chandigarh: Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor of Punjab, on Friday highlighted the state government’s achievements over the past year, particularly in tackling drug abuse and strengthening the education sector.

Addressing the media in Chandigarh, Kataria said that discussions during village committee meetings indicated a noticeable decline in drug-related activities across the state. He stated that nearly 41,000 people have been arrested as part of the government’s ongoing anti-drug campaign. The Governor also praised Punjab’s performance in education, claiming that the state currently holds the top position in the country in the education sector, calling it a significant achievement.

However, the Governor’s remarks drew sharp criticism from the opposition. Pratap Singh Bajwa, Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, dismissed the claims as “a bundle of lies.” Bajwa alleged that both the Finance Minister and the president of the Aam Aadmi Party walked out while the Governor was addressing the Assembly.

Criticising the administration, Bajwa termed the government “a failed one” and claimed that the upcoming state budget would be the last presented by it. He clarified that the Governor was not at fault but accused the state government of failing on governance and public welfare.

The contrasting statements reflect a widening political divide in Punjab as the state moves closer to upcoming elections. While the ruling party highlights progress in law enforcement and education, the opposition continues to question the government’s credibility and performance.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that the budget session of the Punjab Assembly will be held from March 6 to March 16, with the 2026–27 state budget scheduled to be presented on March 8 by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema.

Speaking at a press conference in Chandigarh, Mann said the session could be extended if required by the Business Advisory Committee (BAC). He also noted that March 8 falls on a Sunday as well as International Women’s Day, adding that if Parliament can function on a Sunday, the state assembly can do the same.

The Chief Minister also announced the “Meri Rasoi” scheme, which aims to benefit around 40 lakh families in Punjab. Under the scheme, the government will distribute ration kits containing wheat through the public distribution system along with 2 kg of dal, 2 kg of sugar, 1 kg of iodised salt, 200 grams of turmeric powder, and 1 litre of cooking oil to improve the nutritional quality of food for beneficiaries.
