New Delhi: Senior BJP leader Nitin Nabin on Tuesday officially took charge as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The ceremony saw the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, outgoing BJP chief JP Nadda, several senior party leaders, and Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states.
A seasoned politician, Nitin Nabin is a five-time member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and a former minister in the Bihar government. Known for his organisational expertise and administrative experience, Nabin has been entrusted with key responsibilities in the party at both state and national levels, including organisational roles in states such as Sikkim and Chhattisgarh.
Born on May 23, 1980, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, Nabin entered politics at a young age. He was first elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 2006 from Patna West. Since 2010, he has represented the Bankipur Assembly Constituency, winning consecutive elections in 2010, 2015, 2020, and 2025. During his tenure in the Bihar government, he held important portfolios including Road Construction, Urban Development & Housing, and Law.
The BJP’s process to elect its national president began after 30 out of 36 state presidents were elected, surpassing the 50 per cent threshold required to initiate the process. The election schedule and electoral roll were announced on January 16, 2026.
As per schedule, the nomination process was held on January 19, 2026, between 2 PM and 4 PM. A total of 37 sets of nomination papers were filed in favour of Nitin Nabin, with endorsements from top leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. BJP leader K Laxman confirmed Nabin’s nomination, paving the way for him to formally assume the party’s top organisational post.
