Luxembourg City, January 7 — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday described Luxembourg as an important partner for India and thanked the country for being a strong advocate of closer ties between India and the European Union.
Delivering opening remarks during his meeting with Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Xavier Bettel, Jaishankar said India’s relationship with Luxembourg has grown steadily over the past 78 years and has gained greater significance in the context of India’s evolving engagement with the EU.
“India sees Luxembourg not only as a valued bilateral partner but also as an influential voice within the European Union,” Jaishankar said. He expressed appreciation for Luxembourg’s role in supporting and shaping deeper India–EU cooperation, calling its backing “of great value” at a crucial moment in the broader relationship.
Highlighting areas for enhanced bilateral collaboration, Jaishankar said both countries have strong potential to expand cooperation in sectors such as fintech, space, the digital economy, and artificial intelligence. He noted that beyond robust trade ties, these emerging and strategic areas offer opportunities for more meaningful and mutually beneficial engagement.
“I see a very active Indian community here and a solid trade relationship, but the issues defining our times—fintech, space, digital technologies, and AI—are areas where we can collaborate far more productively,” he said, adding that he looked forward to in-depth discussions during the visit.
Jaishankar also shared details of the meeting in a post on X, describing it as an excellent and warm interaction. He said discussions covered bilateral cooperation, global developments, and specific areas such as finance, investment, digital technologies, AI, space, and talent mobility. He also appreciated Bettel’s personal interest in highlighting Luxembourg’s heritage and traditions.
The meeting comes as India and the EU continue efforts to strengthen strategic, economic, and technological partnerships amid evolving global dynamics.
