With winter setting in, Majuli has transformed into a misty wonderland as dense fog envelops the world’s largest river island. The thick white veil adds a magical touch to the region, delighting residents and drawing visitors eager to witness its serene winter charm.
Mornings in Majuli now begin with fog-covered fields, roads and riverbanks, turning the landscape into a picturesque, dream-like scene. Nature lovers and photographers have been flocking to the island, capturing the ethereal beauty of the fog-draped surroundings that reflect Majuli’s pristine environment.
Amid this enchanting winter backdrop, Majuli is hosting the Charaichung Festival for the second time. The four-day event, held from December 7 to 10, celebrates the 392-year-old legacy of Charaichung, Asia’s first protected Royal Bird Sanctuary, established in 1633 by Ahom king Swargadeu Pratap Singha. Organised by Majuli Sahitya and local residents, the festival aims to highlight Charaichung on the global map and revitalise its bird habitat.
A special exhibition on forest conservation is also part of the festivities, showcasing ongoing efforts to protect Majuli’s biodiversity and reaffirming the community’s commitment to preserving the island’s natural heritage.
Durgeswar Saikia, President of the Charaichung Festival Celebration Committee, said, “We welcome everyone. Charaichung, founded in 1633 by Ahom King Pratap Singha, has been deteriorating over time. Since last year, with the support of the people of Majuli and from across Assam, we have been working to restore it. Today it is a beautiful site, and we invite people to experience its ethnic beauty. Tourists from Germany, Australia, America and other countries have been visiting not only Charaichung but other heritage sites as well. As we celebrate this festival for the second time, we appeal to the people of Assam to help us preserve our heritage.”
Majuli remains one of India’s most significant bird sanctuaries, home to a rich variety of birds and aquatic life, making it a must-visit destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts from around the globe.
