Canacona (Goa): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled a towering 77-foot bronze statue of Lord Rama at the Shree Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math in South Goa’s Canacona.
The Prime Minister is also scheduled to take part in the ‘Sardha Panchashatamanotsava’, marking the 550th anniversary of the historic Math. As part of the celebrations, he inaugurated a newly developed Ramayana Theme Park and released a special postal stamp along with a commemorative coin.
Packed day of spiritual and cultural engagements
Earlier, PM Modi held a roadshow in Udupi, Karnataka, after participating in the Laksha Kantha Gita Parayana, where over one lakh devotees recited shlokas from the Bhagavad Gita at the Sri Krishna Matha.
In Udupi, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the Suvarna Teertha Mantapa, located in front of the Krishna sanctum, and dedicated the Kanaka Kavacha, a golden cover for the sacred Kanakana Kindi—the legendary window through which Saint Kanakadasa is believed to have witnessed Lord Krishna’s divine vision.
PM Modi highlights Udupi’s ties to Jana Sangh and good governance
While addressing the gathering, PM Modi praised Udupi for being the karmabhoomi of the Jana Sangh and a model of good governance. Recalling former MLA VS Acharya’s contributions, he noted that the foundations of modern civic systems in Udupi—such as cleanliness drives and organised water and drainage systems—were laid as early as the late 1960s and 70s.
He described the mass Gita recital as a moment that showcased India’s “divinity” to the world, stating that the collective chanting generated spiritual energy that strengthened both mind and body.
The Prime Minister also drew cultural connections between Udupi and Dwarka, recalling his recent visit to Kurukshetra and acknowledging the spiritual legacy of Jagadguru Madhvacharya, founder of the Udupi Math.
With the unveiling of the monumental Ram statue and the Ramayana Theme Park, the day marked significant cultural milestones both in Goa and Karnataka.
