Bengaluru: As Karnataka braces for intense rainfall, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has assured the public that the state government is fully prepared to respond to any weather-related emergencies. Addressing the media on Friday, Shivakumar outlined a series of proactive measures being taken to minimize the impact of heavy rains across the state.
“All deputy commissioners have been directed to remain on high alert and take immediate action wherever necessary. Ministers have also been instructed to stay at their respective headquarters to oversee local response efforts,” he said.
In Bengaluru, one of the hardest-hit regions, authorities have already identified vulnerable and flood-prone zones. “My team is already on the ground in these areas,” the Deputy CM confirmed.
Shivakumar emphasized the importance of clearing encroachments that block the natural flow of rainwater, particularly in urban areas. On Thursday, he personally inspected stormwater drains at Manyata Tech Park and reiterated the government’s commitment to taking strict action under the Disaster Management Act.
“Officials have been asked to remove all structures that obstruct water flow. While some parties have obtained court stays, we are urging full cooperation to avoid flooding. We are not out to harass property owners, but we must find a lasting solution,” he said.
The DeputyCM assured that affected property owners would be compensated in cases involving technical complications. “We will not randomly demolish buildings, but ensuring smooth water flow is essential. We must protect Bengaluru’s reputation and prevent further urban flooding,” he added.
The state leadership, including the Chief Minister, has already visited several rain-affected areas as part of ongoing relief and inspection efforts.
