Agency (Bihar): Extreme heatwave conditions in Bihar have caused several students in at least three districts to fall unconscious on Wednesday, officials reported. The state recorded its highest-ever temperature at 47.7°C in Aurangabad on Tuesday, with temperatures crossing 44°C in several places.
In response, Bihar Chief Secretary Brajesh Mehrotra convened a high-level meeting to assess the preparedness of relevant departments. Pratyaya Amrit, Additional Chief Secretary of the Disaster Management Department, confirmed the meeting, scheduled for 3:30 pm, aims to review the state’s readiness to handle the extreme heat.
Suresh Prasad, Headmaster of a middle school in Mankaul, Sheikhpura district, reported that 6-7 students fainted during assembly prayers due to the heatwave. Similar incidents were reported from Begusarai district and Motihari in East Champaran district. Teachers provided first aid, but the extreme heat continues to pose significant challenges.
RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav criticized the state government for not taking the matter seriously. He urged immediate preventive measures to protect school children, questioning Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s lack of intervention. Yadav expressed concern over the CM’s weakened influence and the bureaucrats’ disregard for his instructions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that heatwave conditions will likely persist for another three to four days. A senior official from the Bihar Disaster Management Department advised people to avoid heat exposure, stay cool, and prevent dehydration.
