Agency (Madhya Pradesh): The Madhya Pradesh government has ordered the closure of 66 nursing colleges across 31 districts following a High Court directive amidst an ongoing Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged irregularities. These institutions were found lacking the necessary infrastructure, with some existing only on paper.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has instructed officials to ensure that students from these affected colleges are not disadvantaged and that arrangements are made for them to take their examinations. The Commissioner of the Medical Education Department has communicated the list of these colleges to the respective district collectors, who have been directed to act in accordance with the High Court’s orders.
The recognition of these colleges had already been revoked, and actions were initiated against institutions in several districts, including Indore. The affected colleges include eight in Betul, six in Bhopal, five in Indore, four each in Chhatarpur, Dhar, and Sehore, three in Narmadapuram, and two each in Bhind, Chhindwara, Jabalpur, Jhabua, Mandla, Rewa, Seoni, and Shahdol. Other districts with colleges on the list include Alirajpur, Anuppur, Barwani, Burhanpur, Dewas, Gwalior, Khandwa, Khargone, Morena, Panna, Sagar, Tikamgarh, Ujjain, Umaria, Vidisha, and Sheopur.
The investigation revealed that officers were allegedly accepting bribes ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh from each institute in exchange for favorable inspection reports. A notable incident involved a CBI official, who was caught accepting a Rs 10 lakh bribe from a nursing college chairman under scrutiny. Following this, the CBI terminated the services of Inspector Rahul Raj.
The CBI and the Anti-Corruption Bureau in Bhopal formed seven core teams and several support teams, including officials from the CBI, nursing colleges, and local patwaris, to comply with the High Court’s directives.
