Agency (New Delhi): In a recent announcement in Lucknow, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge promised a significant increase in the amount of free rations provided to the poor if the INDIA bloc is elected. The current government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi offers five kilograms of rations monthly to the poor as part of its welfare initiatives. Kharge highlighted this scheme, critiquing it by recalling the Congress party’s introduction of the Food Security Act, and argued that the BJP had not built on these foundational efforts.
At a press conference alongside Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Kharge committed to doubling the free ration to 10 kilograms per month under an INDIA bloc government. He assured voters of this promise by referencing successful implementations in states like Telangana and Karnataka where Congress had previously governed.
Adding to the discourse, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized the current government’s reliance on free rations as a solution, arguing it does not provide long-term self-reliance or future-building for the youth. Instead, she advocated for creating more employment opportunities to truly empower the younger generation.
The BJP, on the other hand, continues to promote its free ration scheme as a cornerstone of its electoral platform, committing to its extension until 2029. Similarly, Akhilesh Yadav promised improvements in the quality of rations distributed if the INDIA bloc is voted into power, aiming to enhance both the quantity and quality of support provided to India’s poor.
