Agency (Mumbai): Mumbai’s political landscape is set for a heated contest in the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for May 20, with key battles occurring across six constituencies. The city, divided into Mumbai South, Mumbai South-Central, Mumbai North, Mumbai North-Central, Mumbai North-East, and Mumbai North-West, will be a significant battleground for both local factions of the Shiv Sena and their national rivals.
In a notable internal conflict, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) will face off in three of these constituencies—Mumbai South, Mumbai South-Central, and Mumbai North-West. Mumbai North-East will witness a contest between the BJP and Shiv Sena (UBT), spotlighting the intense rivalry within the city.
The traditional political rivalry between the BJP and Congress will also be on full display, with key matches including notable figures such as Congress’s Mumbai unit president Varsha Gaikwad and BJP’s veteran Union minister Piyush Goyal.
The electoral dynamics in Mumbai are further complicated by recent defections and political realignments, with former leaders from both the Congress and Shiv Sena changing sides, setting the stage for a fiercely contested election. This election is the first major test of the new political alignments that emerged after the 2019 shifts, offering a critical look at how these changes will impact both local and national political narratives.
