Agency (Karnataka): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has formally requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to cancel the diplomatic passport of Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna. Revanna, embroiled in a sexual abuse scandal, allegedly left for Germany as accusations surfaced. Siddaramaiah’s letter, sent on Wednesday, also urged the use of all available diplomatic and law enforcement resources to expedite Revanna’s return to India to face legal proceedings.
Prajwal Revanna, a 33-year-old leader from the JD(S) and descendant of prominent political figures, including former PM H.D. Deve Gowda, is currently under investigation. This controversy arises amidst his campaign for re-election in the Hassan constituency, which had its polls last Friday. The Chief Minister labeled the allegations against Revanna as “horrific and shameful,” stating they have disturbed the national conscience.
The urgency of the situation led to the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on April 28, following the circulation of videos allegedly showing Revanna engaging in the abuse. Reports suggest that Revanna, anticipating legal action, fled India using his diplomatic passport on April 27.
The Karnataka Police have initiated a case against both Prajwal and his father, H.D. Revanna, based on accusations from Prajwal’s former housekeeper. The charges include sexual harassment, criminal intimidation, and outraging a woman’s dignity under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Following these serious allegations, the JD(S) has suspended Prajwal Revanna from the party, marking a significant political fallout. The state’s efforts are now focused on ensuring Revanna’s return to India to stand trial, as emphasized by the Chief Minister in his communication with the Prime Minister.
